Selecting an appropriate ioniser

A water ioniser is a device which substitutes a professional chemical laboratory at home. It is necessary to produce alkaline water – the most valuable water that the human body needs.

What is the process of water ionisation?

With an ioniser, it is possible to conduct an electrolysis reaction and obtain alkaline and acidic water as a result. The process of electrolysis is induced by electric voltage applied to electrodes (cathode and anode). Then, a separation of alkaline metal ions and hydroxyl residues from acid residues takes place. The cathode gets alkaline cations, whereas the anode – acidic anions. As a result, alkaline water (containing e.g. magnesium, sodium, potassium and calcium ions) and acidic water (containing e.g. chloride, sulphur, sulphide, phosphorus and hydrogen ions) is produced.

A condition for the production of ionised water is providing a constant flow of electric current applied to the electrodes.

The importance of ioniser selection

In theory, an ioniser is an ioniser. However, you should be aware that these devices – even though they have the same primary function – may differ. It is a good idea to compare various models in order to choose a device perfect to your needs and expectations.

If price is the major criterion for you, you don’t need to search further. You can just buy the cheapest ioniser from our offer in order to produce alkaline water. However, remember that the cheapest does not always mean the best choice for you. On the other hand, the most expensive one is not always the best. This is why you should be guided by the major parameters and characteristics of these devices. What should we pay attention to?

There are several simple criteria that need to be considered. These include:

  • the simplicity of using the device,
  • functionality,
  • types of electrodes,
  • number of electrodes,
  • the ORP ratio,
  • pH scope,
  • type and life of the filter,
  • type of the ioniser,
  • low energy consumption,
  • water flow – performance.

As far as the degree of simplicity of using the device is concerned, it is best to chose ionisers with an uncomplicated user’s manual and simple process of obtaining ionised water. Remember to check if the manual is in your language.

The greater functionality of the ioniser, the more opportunities offered by the device. Classical ionisers are primarily used to produce alkaline and acidic water. However, in our offer you can also find devices which can produce silver water, which has strong antibacterial properties. Also, check if the ioniser has a program of automatic cleaning of its system (mainly the ionising electrodes) and internal filters. Functions such as self-diagnosis and error display can also prove helpful.

When choosing the device, you should pay attention to the types of electrodes used. It is vital to choose the best ones as the ioniser will work as long as the electrodes function properly. You should be aware that electrodes are subject to wear during each water ionisation. It particularly applies to the electrode with a positive potential, i.e. anode. Therefore, if you chose the cheapest ones made of steel, you can expect quite fast exploitation of the device. The best choice is an ioniser with titanium electrodes coated with neutral oxide sinters or platinum. The life of such electrodes is at least a dozen years.

Speaking of electrodes, it is worth mentioning about another significant criterion in the choice of an appropriate ioniser. The number of electrodes is not as important as their surface. A device may have even 9 electrodes but it would be inefficient if their surface is small. Therefore, it is better to use an ioniser with a smaller number of electrodes but with a larger surface – this way you can obtain better quality ionised water with the best parameters.

When choosing an ioniser, pay attention to the ORP (oxidation-reduction potential) ratio. It is what determines the strength of ionised water. The more negative the ORP, the better antioxidant properties. In practice, this means that such alkaline water will be much better for your health.

Also significant in the choice of the proper ioniser is the pH scope. The larger it is, the wider range of applications for the water produced in that ioniser. If your major goal is to restore your acid-alkaline balance by producing alkaline water, look for a device with the pH scope between 5.0 and 9.5. However, if you want to use ionised water not only for drinking but also for external purposes (such as to treat wounds or burns), the best ioniser will have a wide pH scope – between 3.0 and 10.0.

If you want to choose an ioniser that wouldn’t wear after several production cycles, check the type and life of the filters used. The filtration system must be very efficient in order to allow you to produce clean and healthy alkaline water. Using separate filters before ionising is extremely important for the proper operation of the device. The filters are designed to purify water more effectively. Another very significant feature is water softening, which will ensure much longer and impeccable operation of the ioniser.

You should also pay attention to the types of ionisers. We offer both free-standing ionisers (e.g. 1.5-litre PTV-KL and 3-litre aQuator Silver) and flow-type ionisers (e.g. Famate, Enkion, Crewelter). The former ones look like electrical kettles and their advantage is the fact that you can move and use them anywhere you like, but they have a small disadvantage – longer time of ionised water production (the ionisation cycle takes about 15 minutes on average). In contrast, flow-type ionisers are available in counter-top and under-counter versions. Due to the flow system, ionised water can be poured immediately. Unfortunately, such ionisers are fixed devices and cannot be moved as they are installed together with the kitchen tap.

Low energy consumption is also significant as far as the choice of an ioniser is concerned. You should be aware that ionisers can work even all day. It is a good idea to check which model has lower power consumption and which one has a standby mode. You can also verify which model has SMPS – a system reducing power consumption while using the device.

Another important parameter is the water flow, or performance of the device. Although it may seem that ionisers with the largest water flow would be the best, don’t be misguided. It would be the best to choose a device with the average flow
